Tamil is an ancient language that has been in use since at least 500 BC. The oldest known written text in Tamil, Tolkāppiyam, was composed around 200 BC. It is believed that the Tamil alphabet developed from the Brahmi script, though some scholars suggest that it has its roots in the Indus script.
